Above the Bed...

I'm often asked how to decorate the space above the bed, and you'll be glad to know that I have many options to suggest.
Check out the ideas and inspirational images below:

framed and matted black and white photographs

small, round mirrors

a series of smaller mirrors

a pair of round/oval mirrors

one large mirror (headboard alternative)

fabric panels and tie-backs to frame the headboard

draped, suspended fabric to create a canopy effect

arranged vintage dishes

creamware collection

artwork as headboard, wings

carved wood elements

architectural salvage

nautical elements, oars

What's above your bed???

Cool Kitchen

What a great utilitarian kitchen!
I love the pockets of reclaimed wood shelving on either side of the range.
The antique kichen island with marble top is such a statement.
I admire the functional transparency of the glass-front refrigerator.
Wish I could see more!

Trend Alert: The Pouf

Poof! It's back. These poufs are once again popping up in stylish interior settings everyday. Of course they are! They are incredibly functional extras that add texture, color, ethnic inspiration, and contrasting shape.
Yet another perfectly practical perch for your tired feet or extra seat!

Rustic Tables

We love working with our Old Lumber company, and frequently find inspiration for new designs in the pages of some of the greatest home magazines around (see magazine images above). If you ever discover an inspiring design that you'd like to share with us, please bring it in. We may even be able to have a table custom made for you in your desired style.

Harvest Furniture in Sunset Magazine!

I just received a new image of the fantastic Sunset Magazine Dream Remodel in Los Gatos, CA. This dining room close-up exhibits so many fantastic design elements...

I love the juxtaposition of Harvest's rustic, square-leg Summit table next to the delicate Louis chair.

The round barrel pendant fixture further emphasizes this composition of square and round shapes.

The brightly-colored, fresh flowers in simple, ivory pitchers add farmhouse simplicity to this transitional space.

Here's the scoop...

We always have an incredible collection of vintage rice scoops available at Harvest. Each one is unique and can be displayed in your home in a variety of ways. May we suggest the following:
  1. letter holder
  2. wine bottle display (choose a deep one)
  3. dried floral container
  4. still life on the mantle
  5. a series hung vertically down the wall
  6. brochure holder
  7. napkin holder
  8. kitchen catch-all
  9. bedside book holder on the wall
  10. actual scoop (dog food? beans? rice?)

Obsession: Open Shelving and All White Dishes

I'm semi-obsessed with white dishes displayed on open shelves. In fact, I recently removed the doors of my own upper kitchen cabinets to display my off-white dish collection. I've been amazed at the convenience of having such accessible shelving, and I would encourage anyone who's not in love with their cabinetry to try the same. If you're able to keep your dishes uniform and organized, I'm sure you'll love the aesthetic and the one-less step in dish duty! To really make the dishes pop, try painting the back wall or cabinet in a contrasting color, or better yet try a bold patterned wallpaper!

Color Update: Complimentary Blue and Orange

There's such a great mix of genres in this transitional space: ethnic, contemporary, traditional
I love how the rug pulls it all together

sky blue wall, crisp white beadboard wainscot, slipcovered white sofa with playful, orange patterned side pillows = cottage chic!

Notice how great the orange and blue look with rustic wood in the pictures below...

the rustic bench is the perfect touch

great with the rustic coffee table and mirror

blue walls, orange accents, incredible rustic dining

neutral room enhanced with orange and blue accents (notice sunburst mirrors - big trend!)

bright orange and blue accents in the nursery are a welcome alternative to princess-pink and baby-blue

sophisticated, smoky, dark blue with a pop of persimmon is masculine but soft

looks great with contrasting zebra print

great quilt!

earthy oranges and soft sky blues combine to create a naturally inviting living room environment

Given the recent popularity of the color Orange in home decor, I thought it would be appropriate to share some Outstanding design images that showcase the Outrageous color with its favorite compliment.  It can be challenging to combine warm and cool colors in a complimentary scheme, but these interiors beg to differ. Orange is fun, playful and optimistic. If you're feeling blue, may I suggest adding a bit of Orange in your life?
